I Support the byes even without any other structural reasons. Anyone can have a bad day, but it would not serve the interests of identifying the best player for one of those top three to not make the semi-finals. If there wasn’t some valid concern that long layoffs hurt performance in sports I would favor more liberal use of byes in professional playoff systems as well.
