Agree, but the OP still needs to experiment with the mirrors and use 
only those that give the best throughput.  Right now his repo URIs  
must be something like http://download.opensuse.org/<path to repos>  
which, when accessed, would forward the connection to the nearest 
geo-ip based server (not necessarily the fastest).

In this respect, I like synaptic's feature to test a bunch of mirrors 
and select the one with the fastest throughput.
