My desktop has only MacAfee Antivirus.  I disabled the on access scan
and used the same example from Wilfred's website SmtpEx....No joy, still
fails.

My Laptop has ZoneAlarm pro.  I have tried it with it enabled (though
access granted for the application of course) and disabled but it's not
happy either way.  I also disabled the AV on that and that also still
failed.

Certainly, the DNS part is ok as I can see the return address of the
server coming back (using Ethereal packet sniffer). However, beyond that
it simply fails.  I have even tried opening a WSocket with the Addr set
to the IP of the server and the port to 25 to see if that helps and that
fails too.  I even thought the packet sniffer might get in the way but
the app still fails with or without that running.

Just to be sure: disable any security product such as firewall you may
have
on your computer, specially Norton product which are known to given
weird
results. Then try again.
