I only wrote the code that way 'cause you were my project manager and
directed me to do so.
<snicker>

What I saw too frequently in the code I helped maintain at Oxford was that
someone would start with a WRITEV, then add another, and by the time the
fifteenth programmer got through following the code that existed, you had
situations like that.

Far too frequently, the code was pure spaghetti, being maintained by people
who didn't have the time to read it and fully understand it, just fixing
problems under pressure to get it done quickly. As well as the frequent
"just get it fixed, don't worry about cleaning it up, the code won't be here
much longer 'cause PULSE will be online soon".

It was a real luxury for me when I developed the Pick (Universe actually)
side of the AMR system, because I was able to add my own fields solely for
my application, and I knew exactly what they were for, and what programs
were maintaining them.

And I'll agree wholeheartedly with your statement earlier regarding the
quality and efforts of most of the programmers at Oxford. It was my
pleasure to work with, and in some cases for, some of the brightest people
I've ever known. Working with Margie, Scott, Steve, Ivan and a host of
others who all had a "make it happen" attitude in their daily lives was
inspiring.
