Anthony: Can you comment out the "WRITE" and replace with a "RELEASE" in the update code. This should identify the problem to either reads or writes.
Next, try deactivating the indexes then rerun the update. This should isolate the indexing code and identify/eliminate it as an issue. Hope this helps a little.
