In UV (I don't know about UD) you can also use the EVAL statement in a SELECT which does this kind of thing at runtime eg: SELECT MYFILE WITH EVAL "UPCASE(@ID)" LIKE "...HELLO..." Works on UniVerse. Have a look at HELP EVAL from TCL.
