(Sorry for top-posting, original quotes at bottom)

George, on the posting to which you refer, I DID put "[ad]" on the back-end
of the subject. If you prefer me to both prefix AND suffix such posts I'll
do so but do we really need to tell people twice?

I find us headbutting on this topic a lot George. My quote which you
included in your post also included this: "We don't like it because we sell
it, we sell it because we like it, and when my clients and colleagues
finally take a look at it they almost inevitably adopt it." My business is
focused on providing solutions. I'm a Pick "consultant" just like lots of
other people here, except my business model is not to be a one man shop but
a much larger international provider of many types of solutions. So we
make agreements to sell the tools that we use, and now also to selling
applications that our clients produce. I'm putting my money where my mouth
is, eating my own dogfood, so to speak. When I find something I like I
don't just talk about it, I'll sell and support it. We're starting to do
this with other products that have nothing to do with MV, but the bottom
line is that the products MUST be quality solutions and they (and the
companies that provide them) must earn their keep in our line-up. We've
dropped products that didn't live up to this.

I've been doing this "forum thing" for about 15 years in this market -
before I sell something it's considered helpful advice, but somehow when I
do adopt something to sell it, it's then perceived as opportunistic
advertising. It hardly seems reasonable given my model for me to talk up
some solution and NOT include it in our catalog.

Please don't hold this process against me and dismiss anything I say as a
sales campaign. I'm just a Pick guy getting and giving information like
anyone else here. I see people in this forum expressing pain all the time
at various options they've tried, using cryptic syntax, getting bogged down
by technical details. I've been through that and I'm trying to show people
the solutions I've found that eliminate these pains. I've seen this for
years and recognizing the opportunitity I've made a business out of solving
the common problems that people present in these forums.

I will certainly put "[ad]" on posts like this but I'm concerned that in
your mind and perhaps in others that this brands my posts as pure and
insincere solicitation. My comments are truly intended to convey what I
believe to be a solution to the problem presented - you'll note that all of
my postings directly offer on-topic solutions, never a gratituous mention
of any unrelated product.

I think the fundamental difference in such postings is that I stand to make
a profit if someone buys the solution from me. Yeah, that's the problem
I'm trying to solve for myself: when I gave the same free advice for years
and got lots of big "thank you"s but was still struggling to pay my bills.
Of course I want to pay my bills, grow my company, and continue to provide
solutions as I always have. For this I make no apology. I will stamp my
comments as "[ad]"s but please remember my stated motivations rather than
assuming something more nefarious. And FWIW, I still provide a lot of free
advice via email as many people here might attest - anyone is welcome to
check with me for a free solution, if I already have it, of course I will
offer it, but I won't withhold other solutions just because I don't sell
them.

Oh and BTW, Chuck - I'd like to make all sorts of comments about
cyber-spanking but I'm afraid they will all get us in trouble or at least
raise some eyebrows, so let's just say your official inquiry has been
noted.

Best to all,
Tony Gravagno
