I have to agree with Dave also.  I do not know the specifics of the
issue, but some changes are not backwards compatible, particularly in
relation to security issues.

The real failure here is the absence of a changelog stating a change occurred.

Some applications that try to maintain perfect backwards compatibility
become more complex than they  need to be.
