We don't mirror but we use filesystem snapshotting for a clean backup with less 
than 10 seconds of downtime:

Dbpause
Sleep few (3-5) seconds
File system snapshot (5 seconds or so)
Dbresume
Backup from snapshot 
Trash snapshot

Only cost in this is enough disk for snapshot.
