Ugh, nasty.
Java is next decade's passe language.
And C was last decade's passe language :)
Meanwhile COBOL is alive and well and living in the hearts of all fortune 500
companies :)
(Even Microsoft???)

Yes we wrote our own code.
And I use the royal "we" my colleague in the next cell did it, so I'll ask him.

Yes, they *want* to do this so they can continue to receive bulk mailing
discounts.

Did you write a UniBasic program to handle the encoding, or did you go another
route such as using one of the USPS's Java or C encoding programs?

They don't *need* to :) they *want* to
Because you get a bulk mailer discount if you do, and you sort it, and its 500
pieces or larger.
Something like that. We just did it.
Personally they probably spent more to program it then they'll ever see in
savings. Ha.

We have a client that needs to print the United States Postal Service’s
Intelligent Mail barcode (Imb) on their bills.

The USPS has provided specifications for encoding the zip codes into the format
needed to print the IMb.
https://ribbs.usps.gov/intelligentmail_mailpieces/documents/tech_guides/SPUSPSG.pdf

(The encoding specifications begin in section 3.2, page 4.)

The ideal solution would be for us to add a call from our UniBasic bill print
program to a subroutine that performs the necessary steps to encode the zip
codes into the IMb format. Has anyone already written a program that does the
encoding?

They are running UniData 6.0.12, SB+ 5.2.4 on Windows Server 2003.
