This sounds like it's back to permissions. If it was UNIX, then I'd say the owner/user for the records(files) was deleted from the system and then editing them assigns a new, valid, owner. You said you're on windows, though.

But at least, I can go through and edit every single bleeping entry in the directory, file it, and make it editable again in Universe.
