There was no output to say that it was checking the filesystem - there usually is. But it is possible. It has happened on two consecutive boots, though admittedly the first time I thought it was completely hung so I switched it off. So it could have been due to do a check and then restarted it the second time.
However the filesystems are ext4 (apart from the small boot partition) and previously fsck on boot has not taken very long and has had output.
