personal preference, But more as to why there seems no reference in the HIG. 
The oldest reference to anyone objecting to splashscreens was Calum >

that's 5yrs ago. Calum maintains the GNOME HIG and worked in Sun, but OOo still 
has the splash. I wonder why! ;-) 
However, in 
http://live.gnome.org/UsabilityProject/HIG/ThreeZero/LondonHackfestNotes , it 
is mentioned as "Splash screens (short version: don’t)" . I'm not sure about 
the status of that page, if it is a draft or has been accepted. 
 Or maybe the splash remains due to a clause in the app's copyright?
I have no preference regarding this, Feel free to follow up with Calum or mpt 
and re-open the papercut when you have made progress... :-)
