Unity was conceived as a response to gnome-shell, which is itself an
even more radical reconceptualization of the GUI. Gnome 2 on the long
term is not a realistic option, so the only real choices are between
G-S, unity, or some other DE such as KDE or xfce. Those who continue
to complain about the default being unity need to realize that gnome 2
is a DE on its deathbeds, whether justified or not, which was a decision
by gnome at large.
