Hi Marty,
Samba 4's server is still experimental (see the package description and
the README.Debian file). The support for upgrading the database files is
still in development upstream, and still a bit flaky. We do care about
fixing the upgrade bugs people encounter, but for the moment purging the
package and creating the configuration from scratch is the best
workaround.
