After reading up I found out that the mainline kernels should be
installed by hand.

I am now using 3.4.0-030400-generic from the Ubuntu Kernel Team and the
error message no longer shows up!

On a side note: the G15 animation is now just as jerky as it was on the
other USB ports. So whatever they did to fix the issue, also slowed down
the port for older USB devices, pitty.

FYI, plugging the keyboard in the USB 3 port now gives:
