I think I found the fix upstream:

in xhci-ring.c there is a line saying:
> /* FIXME allocate more room */

Followed by the error and a return of -ENOMEM.

- Andiry Xu implements a ring expansion algorithm to allow larger data
chunks on the ring by attempting to expand it first before throwing out
the -ENOMEM.
