Just to let you know that I have axactly the same problem and symptoms (freeze with pattern of horizontal bars appearing on the screen) than Greg Supina., on two very different computers (One Intel and one AMD).
Ubuntu 13.4 fresh installs, less than one month ago. But the common point with Greg is that these two computers are setup with two disks. MInes have Windows Vista on the first one, and Ubuntu on the second. Boot directly from the second hard drive (where grub is).
