I changed from the nouveau to the nvidia drivers and, so far, it seems more stable. I have not been able to cause my system to crash yet. After more testing I will get back to you.
The drivers I am using are called "nvidia-304, tested" and "nvidia-304-upgrades." I have not tried the other available nvidia driver yet. However, when I began to use the nvidia driver, it reduced the resolution on my monitor. Also, the display no longer fills the whole screen. About 3/4" is left blank at the right side of the monitor. Also, the settings manager does not provide any option for any higher resolution, only the options of two lower resolutions, although the monitor is capable of displaying at a higher resolution. The nouveau driver displayed the text and pictures better, at a higher resolution, and filled the whole screen properly.
