I'm sorry, I overlooked that SRUs are being requested to add this package to 12.04 LTS and 14.04 LTS; I should have registered my discomfort with this earlier.
I thought the end goal of this MIR is to bring this package into 14.10, a short-term release, where the consequences of hypothetical unfortunate upstream management are time-limited. If there were no issues in 14.10, 15.04, or 15.10's maintenance lifetimes, this package would likely be fine in 16.04 LTS, assuming we keep the same schedule as usual and upstream keeps the same discipline. If there were issues, we could demote the package to universe before an LTS release includes it. However, bringing this package directly into existing LTS releases and committing to nearly five years of support on such a huge package before upstream has had a chance to demonstrate maintenance discipline worries me deeply. Upstream has made some awkward decisions (no versioned tarballs, no signatures, roughly 30 embedded dependencies) that are greatly worrying and I really wanted to give them a chance to demonstrate discipline with smaller resource commitments before the much larger LTS resource commitment. Please consider dropping the SRU to existing LTS releases.
