Ubuntu Hardy Alpha 2 has the same problem. When installing Hardy, it saw (other than the internal WD HDD) the USB Maxtor OneTouch II HDD as an option. So it sees the external USB HDD, but it doesn't displays it on the Desktop or anywhere else.
