Just also adding -flto=auto to LDFLAGS (in addition to CFLAGS) did not
start to cause the issue on the git build.

But I think it is worth trying export
DEB_BUILD_MAINT_OPTIONS=optimize=-lto in the PPA builds.

And indeed the no-LTO build in:

seems to be the first that is fine again.

Double checking with a fresh test environment ...
