In regard to the MIR, First of all, thank you Otto and you MariaDB foundation so much! You have been supportive not just in this request but throughout the years. And recently around this request Otto really was active and resolved so much we asked for. In discussions around FOSDEM we further aligned to ensure our long term plan to make MySQL and MariaDB co-usable can work out, and there again the support was really great. These were the discussions you hinted at with “Upstream has however been involved in the design discussions” above.
The only remaining need is to get the two to be more co-usable, but that is to protect us in a future where they diverge even further. * Short term Lena and you work on the data directory move (allow them to be installed mutually exclusively, without stepping on one-another’s data) * Mid term Lena and you will likely be working together to make them co-installable But for now, they do not yet diverge so much that we require the final solution. For the upcoming LTS I think we are ready. And as you outlined in your request that also brings all your great tracking of CVEs, the availability of fixes per commit, all your collaboration and all the other things that always were a good argument to consider MariaDB. Due to that I once more discussed [1] this with the rest of the MIR team. There was no objection to my proposal to promote MariaDB in the current state to main in 26.04 due to all of the above. Let me please clarify that this is not a decision against MySQL, that stays in main as it is. It is a decision in support of MariaDB to provide users the choice between the two on equal terms in the upcoming LTS and onwards. @Lena - would you mind to do the seed change to pull it into main along the other databases? P.S. You Otto are on the agenda to get MOTU upload rights, I'd ask you to extend that application to also request a PPU (https://documentation.ubuntu.com/project/who-makes- ubuntu/developers/dmb-joining-ppu/) for src:mariadb, src:mariadb-10.6 and any such. Because once it is in main, you'll need that on top of MOTU to be able to continue the great joint efforts around m*sql.
