Argh, I'm an idiot! Sorry, I forgot one line in the instructions above:
to do piboot-try --reset-new *again* before the reboot where we record
the serial output (otherwise it's just doing a normal boot, whereas what
we're trying to capture is the double-boot where it tests new assets).

I'll edit the instructions above -- sorry again for the confusion!
