I am sympathetic to your claimed desire to keep Debian and Ubuntu aligned. However, it is difficult for me to take this claim at face value. Ubuntu is its own distribution and is perfectly capable of making decisions on its own that diverge from Debian. E.g., none of the coreutils-from and coreutils-from-* mess exists in Debian, despite there being an attempt to force it upon Debian [1]. This, along with the use of uutils in general, is a large maintenance burden to undertake, as evidenced by numerous SRUs.
To say that bumping a version number and applying a single patch not included in the version distributed in Debian is too much of a maintenance burden, but multiple SRUs for uutils are not, completely betrays the idea that Canonical has any interest in keeping GNU coreutils as a supported package, despite previous promises. It also feels like you are blaming a Debian maintainer, which feels a bit rude given that Debian maintainers are under no obligation to consider the release cadence of Ubuntu in their maintenance work. As I said previously, Ubuntu is a separate distribution perfectly capable of making its own decisions. This feels like proof to me that adequately maintaining multiple "providers" for coreutils is not possible for a distribution to undertake. For that reason, alongside licensing concerns with uutils, I plan to completely oppose the ideas introduction in Debian or other distributions. This is different from my feelings on the matter a few months ago [2].
