You might be able to clear up the issue by removing ~/.openoffice.org2 directory. Compiz is the visual effects program in Ubuntu, sometimes setting visual effects to none corrects problems. OpenOffice.org is known to have several problems when visual effects is turned on. The part you think is evolution is probably the package openoffice.org- evolution, that package can be safely removed if you want without removing evolution it just provides a way from openoffice.org to get address book data from evolution.
