I've installed XUBUNTU 8.04 on a Toshiba laptop (I believe it's an M35 series) without any problem. The built-in WiFi card was correctly identified as an Atheros chipset, and it allowed me to both connect to my secured home network as well as an open network at Panera Bakery.
I too do not like YaSt. Have you tried PCLinuxOS? I also had luck with that on the Toshiba laptop. It is Mandriva-based.
