I have always had luck in fixing Open Office by doing a complete
removal then a reinstall.  It would be nice to know what broke, but it
is almost a guaranteed fix by uninstall/reinstall.

Make sure you get the application from the repositories so any
dependencies are taken care of...

SYSTEM>ADMINISTRATION>SYNAPTIC PACKAGE MANAGER

BTW: Uninstall/reinstall fixes itself in Windows as well as Linux.
