I have subscribed to ubuntu forums and they solved my Open Office
problem by suggesting subpixel smoothing. I'm amazed that such a
small change worked.
System->Preferences->Appearance->Fonts

However, they did not solve my Kile etc problems where the top menus
show clearly but the submenus are blank. Any thoughts?
