Thanks for the suggestion of re-installing Open Office. I tried this
today but the problem persists. The fact that other packages are
affected suggests the problem is 'higher up' than a single
application. If I don't figure it out in the next few days I guess
I'll have to regenerate the entire Ubuntu.
