Unlike last session where I was able to squeeze in six games in our
standard evening this one went the opposite direction – yet was still
as enjoyable.
After waiting well over two hours for Mark Tyler to show up - all the
rest of us decided that more than likely he was going to be a no-show
and we dove in. I'm not sure about these Tuesday night sessions going
on at BGR - it must be scratching his itch and he and Ken decided to
abandon ship... ;)

SMALL WORLD: After waiting, in reality, about 15 minutes to make sure
everyone that was going to show up was here we split up. Josh,
Alison, Rich, Andrea (hope I got the spelling right on all those!) and
I split off and decided to give Small World a go around. I thought I
was more likely to get other games to the table so I wasn't as brushed
up on the rules as I would normally have been and had to refer a few
times but we managed to fumble through. My biggest mistake was
putting the mountains on the tunnel spaces ;)

My first play through was quite enjoyable. With so many races and
never having played Vinci I just chose the top race and went for it to
get a feel for things. Andrea came out of the gate with a good
combination race where she could take water as if it was land, and
when the race went into decline all the characters stayed on the
board. We also had invasions of Ratmen, Amazons, Dwarves and merfolk.

I went into decline first as my ratfolk really had no power and has
stretched themselves into oblivion quickly. I ended up doing this a
total of twice and came out in second place in the end thanks to some
flying humans. Scores were all competitive at the end of the game but
Andrea came out on top thanks to some dang sorcerers with forts and
her previous race. I will enjoy playing this one again.

We wrapped up about the same time as the other group that played a
game of Goldbrau we shifted around again. NateT and Mark joined me in
a three player game of Le Havre (woohoo! finally got to play it!). I
know another group was able to get Pandemic in (which Andrew taught)
and there was another game going on as well but I can't remember what
it was.

I enjoyed LeHavre. It is certainly going to take a few games to wrap
my head around everything. Getting to know the standard buildings
will be one of those important things as we were pretty much learning
them as they came up after building or purchasing other buildings.
This is a game that builds up - starting out quickly but once about
15-20 buildings are out there the decisions get much more agonizing
and can take longer as you decide what it is that you want to do. I
am sure it will play faster next time, but even with only three
players it took us over three hours to finish.

In the end that last special building couldnt' have played into my
hand better as it was the smokehouse and I already had a bunch of meat
from my slaughtered cattle and a bunch of wood which I quickly turned
to charcoal and got myself 24 gold. I will have to play a few more
times through as there is some initial concern that a card like that
could really throw the game to someone that happens to have the right
stuff when it comes up.

A great evening as always.
