We have customers who regularlry use Maxmind, both free and commercial
without issue.
We have seen some issues where an integration with the Maxmind free DB
worked but completely screwed up with the paid for version. This might
be limited to the Netfilter GeoIP modules for Linux however.
As Dónal alluded to, things can get interesting around the border areas
here in Ireland especially if different parts of an application use
different GeoIP data sources...
