Hi, Mario excellent stuff not quoted (sorry, its late..)
some short comments: we are using parted 1.8.8 now A pile of Thinkpads was the reason i added the 'ntldr-fix', parted 1.6.22 did always write 255 heads into the partition, not 240 as is needed. Same did parted 1.7.1 Yes, There was a bios upgrade for some of the Thinkpads, but not all. At least I stopped looking for them when I had one of the models on the table and no bios upgrade was to be found. Later more machines needed the disk geometry fix because the kernel switched to the libata system, and the old disk geo fix Pat implemented for these PATA machines stopped working. Now it seems like we have some machines that do not report the correct 'legacy' bios geometry thru the edd kernel module. It can be that it is reporting from the wrong drive, or something else.. This is something we have not been aware of before Maybe some more logic and sanity checks are needed.. I hope a pattern will emerge, maybe that can be helped by always dumping the first part of the disk and partitions to file for later examination (dumping before we start touching the disk). cheers :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by the 2008 JavaOne(SM) Conference Don't miss this year's exciting event.
