i suppose that some sort of BIOS/chipset  DB should be used then?
Since for some chipsets/BIOSes it works, for some it doesn't...

maybe we should use a blacklisting-approach? Suppose it always works,
except on X, and if it doesn't work on X, add X to the blacklist ?
