In my 2nd grade class I support various types of reading.
First come time for "just right" books. These are leveled books that
students can select but I control the leveled boxes.
Next come partner reading of these books. I rotate partners so kids get a
variety of texts to listen to.
Guided reading is done around this time.
Then as we progress throughout the year I support a "choice time" for
books.
The entire room is open for their reading. I conference with students
during this time and talk with them about their selections.
Choice reading usually comes around the time of our nonfiction genre study.
I want kids to know they can pick up books they are interested in and read
captions, headings, bold text and bring their background knowledge into
play.
I do not want to be the teacher who tells them "You can't read that book,
it is too hard for you".
As an adult I choose books based on interest. I plan to reread a book on
reflexes, a hard topic for me to comprehend.
But, I just returned from a retreat and my interest level is high. In
addition, I acquired more background knowledge by talking with others.
