I think that might be where I am headed next year. Our 3rd grade teacher thinks
her reading and writing instruction are both weak, and it makes me worry about
the kids that are coming to me, especially since she looped from 2nd with this
group. I wonder how far I will need to back track, and if they will be able to
self select reading materials. I have a feeling I will be doing loads of
modeling and explicit teaching at the beginning of the year.

That does not mean that I will not be futiliaing authentic texts and allowing
student choice, because that is the teaching model I've been using for the past
5 years. I'm thinking I will need to be far more explicit than ever before in
the selection process so students are reading at an appropriate level.

I also think I'm going to have to focus on 5 of the 6 systems. They've had a
hefty dose of Fundations phonics practice, and will need some balance. It will
be an interesting year for them as well as for me.
