Russell G. Stauffer is probably before your time!! In my opinion, he is one of the most important giants upon whose shoulders the entire balanced literacy movement stands. I think the last book I've read of his is Directing Reading Maturity as a Cognitive Process, published in 1969!! He received the special service award from IRA for unusual and distinguised service in 1967. He really understood deeply the reading/writing connection. I've copied a little blurb from one of his books (which, btw, you can get from amazon.com cheaply): One of the milestone books in the modern approach to teaching reading, now reprinted. More relevant and useful today than when it was first published. This book is notable for presenting the bases for Stauffer’s claims that reading is a thinking process that must be facilitated by teachers using holistic instructional approaches that integrate the language arts.
