Have you looked at 'The Icon Programming Language' book by
Griswold & Griswold? I think that's a pretty good introduction,
and has descriptions of keywords, syntax, functions in the back.
One thing to keep in mind is that Icon *is* different than
conventional languages - and one does have to shift how one
thinks to make the most advantage of it. However, what I've
found is that this shift *also* helps in programming other
languages - one learns to think more in terms of concise solutions
to problems - with the result that the final code becomes cleaner.
I've never seen Christopher's book and so can't comment on
its suitability for a newbie, but taking some time up
front to understand the fundamental models of any language
is almost always a win in the end. (I've seen too many
people who *still* manage to write Fortran code in every
language they use...) While one can write Icon code
that behaves like the code in other languages, one is
almost always going to feel unsatisfied with the result,
just as the Fortran programmer isn't going to write
good Java code without understand the object-oriented
model.
If you want to stick with trying Icon/Unicon, I'm sure the people
on this group would be happy to try and help with the rough
spots of Icon/Unicon.
