The two languages that most improved my general programming skills
were Icon and Caml. Both were plateau-changers, by introducing
entirely new ways to think of problems, though Icon allowed me to
write Fortran programs in it for some time.

(Learning Caml also introduced me to type safety, which is far more
useful than I would have expected from experience with ordinary ‘type
safety’. However, experience with type safety is not so easily
translated to other languages, while functional programming is.)
