Welcome to the ONAN nightmare

There are several things to do. I finally got my ONAN working properly,
but it took a lot of effort.

1) There is a load manager adjustment that adjusts the fuel flow
depending on load. If you haven't touched this, then it may not need an
adjustment

2) If the carb is out of adjustment, you will likely see some black
smoke at the ONAN exhaust

3) I had to rebuild the carb, new floats, nozzles etc (you can get a
kit for this)

4) Once the carb is rebuilt, you need to do a final adjustment with
the load on, but you can only adjust the jets with a custom tool. This
was the hardest part for me

5) If the float is stuck, you will see gas in your oil reservoir.
This is what lead to my nightmare (gas in the oil)

6) The other issue is the electric choke...it floods the ONAN as it
starts to fail. I removed the electric choke and put a manual cable
in...now it runs much better. Check if the spark plugs are wet (this
will determine if you're flooding)

Let me know if you have further questions.

My Onan is diesel , so I have no specific experience with the unit
involved, but the first thing I usually hear is: Did you check the fuel
filter? If you think it is running rich, do you see a lot of dark smoke
from the exhaust? That could confirm a rich condititon.

Onan MCCK 6.5. Yesterday fired up the genny to let it run
w/load and
no probs. Today, I fired it up and first put a light load on it.
Then
I put the water heater on and genny RPMs dipped way down and
wanted to
die (first time it has done this). RPMs never recovered after
this,
        even with no load.

I think I can smell some fuel. Is it possible the carb float
stuck
and it's running way too rich? The genny has never been a
problem.
Are there any tricks to check before addressing the carb?

        Thanks
