I am not a marine engineer but I have done some work in a full service machine
shop. although most shafts start off as a certain diameter, they have sometimes
been reconditioned and then there original size can be questionable. And yes
the do have ways to put material ( hard chrome plating) back on a shaft and
then turn it to reach a desired diameter.

For a person that seems to know so much about everything how is it that you can
remove both shafts without knowing what diameter they are??
What do you mean about reconditioning the shafts? How do you do that?
Are there grooves worn into the shafts? Are they going to be welded or metal
sprayed back to original size and then ground. Are they straight to begin with?
What is the base material to work with?
Might want to look into dripless shaft seals?
Lots of questions to be asked don't you think.
