I don't know much about those generators but I do have some suggestions. Check air filters. Hi ash and soot content can be a big sign of running rich. Of course that can come from either needing cleaning or from a really clogged up air filter. When you had to reprime the engine, did you happen to notice if there was air in the fuel line? How much priming did it take? I think checking all the fuel filters is a good start.

I need advice. Hi All. I have a very old Generator in my 1983 32 SS. Diesel I do not know for sure weather it is a 3 kw or 4 kw or what. Can not tell the brand for sure. It says "San Juan Engineering" on the water tank on the top. So I assume it came from the Bellingham original build out. Water flows ok when running. It is being problematic and it had been a trusted and rather dependable unit for a long time. On a recent trip I noted that it was puting out a lot of suet/ash/grime on the water. Not oil. But almost looked like that. One mechanic suggested that it was bogged down from under use. Too much idle. Not enough load. So I ran it with some load and it gave me a bit of relief from the ash after a half our with 4 k on it. (at the dock the week before Memorial day trip) On Memorial day trip it worked day one OK with little ash. Day two it died out and had to prime it to get it to work. But was sketchy. Then by day 3 gave up on me. Not wanting to run. Ideas... A.] fuel filters clogged B.] poor old thing gave up the ghost and died C.] other I'm going to try to find the filters today and check that. Any suggestions on Option C ? Thanks in advance for all your Ideas for other things to check. Keith L.
