Matt--I have both the external water intake strainer which is mounted to the
bottom of the boat as well as a bronze internal strainers with the removalable
basket.  Although I have never picked up enough stuff through the external
strainer to ever cause an overheat problem, I am glad that what I do get in the
strainer baskets from time to time does not get into the transmission oil heat
exchangers which is the first location that the raw water goes from the water
pumps.  Hal

Matt,

There are wedge shapped strainers that are mounted over the bronze thru hull.
I'm not sure if they were standard on the Flites or not.  There is also
internal strainers with removable baskets that mount on top of the bronze thru
hull.  If you have the wedge external filter, an internal would be redundant.
The hole size is almost the same in both.  I believe the external is made by
Wicox.  The internal are made by several companys and are much more money than
the external.

Below the water line, stick with bronze.  Also delrin (white plastic thru
hulls) are very tough, they do get brittle with age.

Thanks

How do you guys feel about the plastic sea strainers vs the bronze?
The plastic are much more affordable but someone recommended that I
not use them for my engines.

Thanks,

Matt
