My 1980 38 had an aluminium plate fixed in the high starboard outside of the 
transom.  Several repaints see it sanded to a mirror finish.  I have removed it 
with the idea, read sufficient enthusiasm, to try to see if x-rays will show 
the stamping;  or was it just printed?  Only other number I can find is on the 
back of drawers
