Looks like you found it. I consider the proper term Hull Identification Number to be the required numbers established by that regulation in late 1972. What you (and I) have might more properly be called the "hull number;" that is, the number assigned in-house by the manufacturer for that particular boat as opposed to the government- required identification number for later boats.
Pedagogical nitpicking, I suppose. Whatever; you've found the number that uniquely identifies your boat, and apparently it's good enough for the authorities.
