I have a problem with my water line/tanks. I'm getting what looks to me like
sand and little rock like pieces in all sizes up to 1/8 in diameter. This has
clogged up my filter in the past but now it's gotten to the point of
restricting water from even getting to the first filter before the pump. The
pump struggles to suck the water through. I have a hose attachment that flushes
the water back into the tank and have done that a couple of times, that works
for a bit then the problem reappears. I have just taken a sample of this sandy
stuff and am going to put it into a glass of CLR, if that dissolves this stuff
then my plan is to dump a couple of containers of it into my tank.
Does anyone have a similar experience on this. It almost looks like small
pieces of some kind of lining, are my holding tanks lined with something that
would cause this??..I have a 42 aft cabin with two water holding tanks
underneath the queen size Island bed.
One fell I spoke with suggested that maybe the previous owner left the boat for
some time with like a inch of water in the tanks and that may of evaporated
down to leave this mineral coating that is now coming free?...way to much
debris for it to be the hoses so maybe it's a lining in the tanks.
Thanks.

By all means I would suggest accessing the inside through a cut out hole.
Glass over the exisiting nipple hole from the inside and paint with a barrier
coat epoxy paint. Proline makes it and it works very well. Then install a new
nipple in a more accessable place. You can even install on the top of the tank
if you put a pick up tube on it. While you are in there clean the tank,
vaccuum out all the years of sediment and get it freshened up.
I had to reline my entire 150 gallon tank with glass due to cracks and leaking.
After i cut three holes in the 14' tank through the floor and then through the
tank lid... i reglassed it , painted it three coats of barrier coat (proline
gray color) , then fitted new covers over the cutouts (which are now access
points should i need them again), repaired the floors, and installed all new
carpets.
The floors have never looked so good and the water tasted more sweet.
It was so worth it.

I think there are manufacturers that make item for your problem. There are
"nipples" that one can locate as desired and patches. One would have to cut an
access hole in or near the top of the tank near the location of the device.
After the repair is complete, the access hole is sealed up.

Nothing in boating is cheap. :) I have to replace one of the water tanks in my
aft cabin because the hose nipple snapped off while I was in the San Juan's
last week. No idea where to get a custom size tank locally either.

If you do not have a local chopper shop then see if you have a local
machine shop. They should also know where to go.

Additionally:

for $600 these guys will sell you a set up for your garage
http://platingsales.com/chromeplating.html

here is another one...slightly cheaper...
