Why remove a working Onan? I assume it is the 6.5 kW MCCK. Is it raw water cooled or does it have a heat exchanger? The block on this generator is basically bullett proof unless you run it too long w/o cooling or oil. I am restoring a '73 36' SS and the generator was a cinch to work on. You can still buy all the basic parts at the Onan dealer. Things like spark plugs, points / condensor, pump kits (both fuel and cooling), and most of the gaskets. The parts that are no longer made can usually be found on eBay. If you decide to keep it I would search eBay and get yourself at least a spare ignition coil and exhaust manifold.
When I started working on mine, I stripped all of the outer workings off of the unit and did a compression check. Low and behold the cylinders were fine. I rebuilt the carb, changed out some old wires, rebuilt the fuel pump, new spark plugs, new oil, boiled the heat exchanger and gave it a new coat of paint and finnally changed the points. Total spent on the unit was about 16 hours and $150 dollars. I fired her up in my garage with a 5 gallon bucket for cooling and she ran perfectly for 6 hours, running my shop vac and a pair of 500 watt halogen lights. Suprisingly it was quieter than my 'silent' honda, that I use for camping, at full load. (Yes I had it hooked up to the vernatone lift muffler). One other thing you may wnat to look at is replacing the brushes in the generator portion. I bought a set of brushes, but when I looked inside I noticed that the ones in the unit still had plenty of life. If you decide to go this route I have all the shop manuals on this unit, including the Control-O-Matic service manual if your unit is equipped with automatic operation. I can scan them in for you if you wish. After all that, I agree, a non marine gen-set is dangerous, no matter where you put it, and I know some marinas in florida will not even let you in the door with one.
