That is what I do in the winter months Capt Perry, works well. I have no
problem starting my 671s darning the warm summer months. I live in Vancouver BC
and last year the water my marina totally froze over, there is a fresh water
creek that empties at the head of the marina that raises the freezing
temperature but just the same it was cold last winter here.
Good advice in my opinion.
I'm not a diesel mechanic and have no idea if this could do some kind of damage
but what I can say is that I have been using your method for years not with no
ill effect.
Monty.

I have seen people crank and crank and crank 671's, I show them this trick
and they start every time very quickly and they do not smoke out the entire
marina with fuel build up.

BEFORE trying to start the engine, HOLD DOWN the KILL switch, then start to
crank the engine with the kill switch held in (do not let go of it), after a
second or two let go of the kill switch while cranking and presto, it starts
right up.

Lot of good information here from everyone's posts. Thanks! I checked the
battery levels and they are fine. The batteries are all the same type. I
actually have 3 sets of batteries. 4 house batteries, two starter batteries
and a separate battery for the genset. All of my battery cables were
replaced in May, with the batteries and are not automotive. I will make
sure I check and clean all the connections this weekend and I definitely
going to order up those check valves. Even when the engines weren't turning
over slowly the starboard engine needed lots of cranking before it seemed to
get fuel. So that makes sense. If the check valves and cleaned contacts
don't fix it I will pull the starters and get them rebuilt over at Romaine
Electric. Awesome...less than 24 hours after posting the question I have a
plan. You guys rock.

Thanks,

Kerry

Kerry: as suggested by everyone to check the batteries, connections,
electrolyte levels etc but also do a battery load test to see if the
batteries have load capacity and check the alternators for output to
see if they are putting back into the batteries what you are taking
out. From your explanation of hard starting, where these engines
overhauled recently or are they original.Detroit's do not have hard
starting issues unless as suggested they have bad starters. You could
suffer from a fuel drain back problem at the primary filter which will
starve the engine for fuel momentarily until the transfer pump picks
up the fuel and gets it to the injectors. You might have to install
one way check valves at the suction side of the primary filters which
traps the fuel in the system and reduce hard starting issues. Your
local Detroit dealer will have these check valves part # 23516919 or
23516993. I installed a lot on logging trucks with V-12's as they had
the same starting issue. Just another possability to look at if the
starters and your electrical systems are ok. If the engines were
overhauled recently, there was an issue on the cam timing and piston
compression ratio from Detroit Diesel as they used different liners
and pistons for California versus the rest of the U.S. Let me know,
just some other ideas on what could be a problem.
