Eric and/or anyone who knows, What's the deal with "acidic" oil? From what I have read, oil left too long becomes acidic and starts to eat the engine. Is this a function of the type of oil itself; in other words, do synthetics break down into more acidic components more readily than natural oils, or is it the accumulation of carbon deposits and the like that makes the oil more acidic? At what point is there a concern? My friend is only putting about 50 hours a year on his engines, and when we were talking about oil changes he said that he would do it as the factory recommends, every 100 hours (which means every 2 years). This of course led to further debating about the acidification of oil and my question here.
Does it matter if the engines are gas or diesel?
