for manifolds

I said reservoir, meant expansion tank. Engines run about 180 deg,no problem,
but I am adding fluid often. no leaks, not on long runs, but when turning motors
on and off I need to keep an eye on the fluid level. Same on both motors.

This sounds like the system on my 318's. I have a diagram and instructions
calling it "The San Juan Cooling System" My heat exchangers are mounted along
each engine on the outside. I have the original aluminum reservoir, none of the
replacement ones fit under the hatch on my '72 SaltyDog.

Am I correct that your engine has a "half" system, that is antifreeze
cooled block and salt (raw) water cooled exhaust manifolds?

If so, the small aluminum reservoir may not be sufficient to cool the
antifreeze after being heated by both the block and the manifolds. In
a full system, one hose from the heat exchanger usually runs to a T
fitting which in turn runs one hose to the aft end of each manifold.
Hoses also run from the forward or top forward end of the manifolds to
a T and then to the thermostat housing. That puts the two manifolds
in the antifreeze circulating system before the fluid enters the
block.

The heat exchanger needs to have fittings for the cooling salt water
in and out and then two more fittings for the heated antifreeze in and
out (total of four). You may want to check with some heat exchanger
manufacturers like Sen Dure in Florida for the capacity and size of
the heat exchanger designed for your engine.

By the way, if the manifolds have been salt water cooled for any
period of time, you may find that the passages are already clogged.
